Dodson gives a great overview into the Incident Safety Officer (ISO) role, safety concepts and how to design an ISO system. He also summarizes how to read smoke, buildings, situational risk, and hazard calls, as well as firefighters (when it's time for rehab, stressors to consider, etc.). Finally, he covers ISO duties at structure and wildland fires, HazMat and technical rescue incidents, post incident responsibilities, and how the ISO position fits into the Incident Command System. The appendix comes with sample ISO SOPs covering incident actions, ISO selection and training, checklists for resource evaluation, recon and report/planning.This book is just under 350 pages, which is short compared to other fire service books I've read. I was expecting a larger book, given the importance of having a safety officer on-scene and the amount of duties the job entails. That being said, Dodson packs a lot of information into these pages. If a fire department is interested in creating an ISO position or if someone wants to learn more about what ISOs do, this would be the book to start with.
